At the Marathon du Médoc, 23 of the best French wineries offer runners their fine wines as oenological refreshments. Runners can also fortify themselves with typical local specialties such as oysters, entrecôte, Cannelés Bordelais and cheese. After the traditional event was cancelled twice because of Covid, there was no stopping me. On Saturday, September 10, 2022, I was there in Paulliac.
Defilee of the costumes blows up the cell phone network
The Marathon du Médoc is called the longest marathon in the world by the organizers with a wink. In fact, the actual distance run is not precisely measured and only a few runners have any competitive ambition here. Most runners want to experience as much as possible on the course in the allotted time of 6 hours and 30 minutes. Almost all participants embody a movie-themed motto. No one wants to miss the display of costumes before the start. The participants take pictures of the costume parade and thus shut down the cell phone network before the start.
During the run through the vineyards near Bordeaux, we not only had to contend with some climbs. On the course, 25 of the best French wineries also offered us their noble drops as oenological refreshments. But not only that: we were also able to fortify ourselves with typical local specialties. Wine and water are available in each of the châteaus. The specialties Cannelés Bordelais, fruits from Aquitaine, oysters, entrecôte, cheese and ice cream are lined up on the last twelve kilometers. The runners have to divide the allotted 6:30 hours according to their pleasure intentions. I crossed the finish line after 6 hours and 22 minutes and am happy with my time allotment. My tracking app shows 194 meters of elevation and does not count the pleasure breaks in the total time. For the sake of enjoyment, I probably covered 1.5 kilometers more than the usual 42.195 marathon kilometers at the tasting stands in some châteaus.
